The Red Cross Now Offers COVID-19 Antibody Testing

Jun 26, 2020

The coronavirus pandemic hasn’t slowed down the American Red Cross. As stay-at-home orders have softened, they’ve collected blood to use for medical procedures and surgeries that have recently resumed.

On June 15, the organization announced that they’re taking an extra step to respond to the virus. For a limited time, the Red Cross is offering free COVID-19 antibody testing for all blood, platelet, and plasma donations.

Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the test screens for coronavirus antibodies in the blood. Antibodies are produced by the immune system to help fight infections, such as the coronavirus. Though the test cannot indicate if the donor currently has the virus, it can reveal the donor’s potential exposure to COVID-19. The test also won’t determine if donors are immune to the virus. However, it can give policy makers greater insight into the virus’ spread throughout the population.

The Red Cross intends for this test to provide key public health information and encourage blood donations. Dot Foods is proud to be a long-time supporter of the organization as it continues to maintain a sufficient blood supply and offer innovative services.
